Famous poet and writer, Maya Angelou, once said, “I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” Giving liberates. Giving frees us from the bondage of ourselves. Giving opens up our soul to be able to empathize with others. Giving teaches us that we are not alone. Giving helps. Giving helps others. Giving helps us. We are not intended to hoard over our items, but instead to share. To give. To help. By giving, we participate in a global movement that is unlike other movements; it is not centered on us, but rather, others first. To give means to share, means to let go, means to not be possessed by our items, means to not let the things we own own us. To give means to put others in front ourselves, to place the needs of others ahead of ours, to look into the eyes of another and see ourselves. Giving is essential to the heart. It is essential to our soul. It is essential to our livelihood. It is essential because it allows us to live beyond ourselves. It allows us to live largely, without gaining everything. It allows us to love. It allows us to live. It allows us to be human again. Give. It is essential to liberating ourselves and liberating others from bondage. In the words of Anne Frank, “No one has ever become poor by giving.” Give, it brings life.
